World Cup Blog: U.S.A. gets a little love in South Africa

26 Jun

Editor’s note: Venues Today magazine has hired University of Florida student Philip Costa to write about his trip to South Africa with students from George Mason University.

I was shopping in Cape Town the other day and was talking to a local about the World Cup.  We started talking about the unfortunate showing from the African nations.  I was surprised when he told me that although he supports all of the African teams he would not be too disappointed if the U.S.A. beat Ghana.  He said that South Africa (locals/media/etc) has been behind the U.S.A. and cheering for them the entire tournament.  I was pretty surprised to learn this, as you will rarely find people outside of the States that are rooting for us.  The primary reason that he gave for South Africa’s support was that we have been the only country that has showed true heart.  We have not given up and have proven that we truly are a team with the desire to win, no matter what obstacles are in front of us.
