Meet Photographer Kristen Blush

18 Mar

Yes, we admit it. We just adore Seattle-based photographer Kristen Blush. Replete with witty charm and a knack for stylized photojournalism, Miss Blush will delight readers this month with her wonderful cover art for the Pacific Northwest special edition. Kristen has plans over the next year to travel and shoot live events and concerts, but luckily, our intern Heather McCloskey was able to track her down and ask her a few (sometimes personal) questions. When did you start working in photography?

When I was in junior high, I was an intern at the Port Orchard Independent newspaper. Port Orchard was the small town where I grew up in Washington, and I had a mentor there who was the lead photographer on the staff and he took me under his wing and taught me how to shoot like a photojournalist.

Were you shooting digital or still using film?

All film, there was no digital at that time. Maybe the digital that was around then was really high end and used by the government or something like that, but it wasn’t really a widely used medium at that time

What’s your most memorable photo shoot?

One of my favorite photographs that I’ve snapped is Star Anna. She’s a very well known Pacific Northwest country musician and I got to spend the day at her home in Ellensburg. I was on her territory, photographing her and her mom. It was very special.

What should your subjects know before stepping in front of your camera lens?

Just trust in my abilities and don’t be self-conscious. Try to look through the lens and see me and feel comfortable working with me.

When was the first time you scored the highly coveted photo pass?

That was Endfest 2000 with the Deftones and Korn headlining. I was 18 years old and got to take pictures of Green Day, Harvey Danger and the Murder City Devils. Last year I shot the Murder City Devils again at Sasquatch Festival. It was kind of fun being a 28-year-old woman going ‘Wow I shot these guys 10 years ago!’

Who was your first celebrity crush?

I’d probably have to say Robert Plant when I was like 13 years old.

Where would you love to see your photographed published, besides of course our wonderful little magazine?

Rolling Stone would be a big accomplishment. Vogue would be a dream come true. I’d even go as far to say National Geographic.

What about an artist would you love to shoot?

MIA would be really cool. If MIA needed a tour photographer, I would be all over that.
